Description
This is one of the earliest American labels we’ve ever had. My guess is it’s around 1855, and certainly at least before the Civil War. There is a high degree of rag content in the label. This practice ended at the beginning of the Civil War in that all the wool and cotton which could be produced was utilized in uniforms and thus removing the rag content from paper stock. This image has an engraving-like image in the center of a Columbia Picture along with two-color steel type all around. It has its own rustic charm. Evidence of some crumpling. No losses. Color is still quite bold.
