Description
“Heart on a Sleeve”, a book for young readers trying to learn French, illustrated by Jean Carlu and published by Brentano’s in 1943. Jean Carlu was trapped in America after having designed the French Pavilion for the New York 1939-40 World’s Fair and created a number of designs during his stay here between 1941 and 1945. “Heart on a Sleeve” was his only book, and is signed and inscribed by both Jean Carlu and his wife. Both inscriptions are to Stanley Harris, an American design associate to Carlu in 1943 and ’44. The book also comes with a sheet which constitutes a vocational recommendation by Jean Carlu for Stanley Harris and is also ink-signed. Ink-signed material by Carlu is very rare. The book is in near mint condition as is the letter of recommendation. Near mint.
