A fascinating partially printed certificate certifying that the individual named served in the U.S. “colored troops” and was an individual in good standing and a free individual. This was especially important in the state of Maryland where the certificate was granted due to the fact that the Emancipation had only happened a year before and the surrender of the Confederacy only a few months before. Maryland was unique in that it had northern and southern sympathizers and that the freedom from slavery was not necessarily a reality in the rural western and southern counties, hence a certificate like this one. Read the blow-up. It is fascinating. Generally in very fine condition barring some light chipping in the right border. Uncommon.
